چکیده
Odontogenic tumor is one of the tumors of great significance in the oral region. The process of its development remains obscure. It seems very advantageous in the investigation of dontogenic tumor to establish experimental models in laboratory animals. However, experimental attempts of induction of odontogenic tumor have not been very successful. In recent years, the carcinogenic property of nitroso derivatives has been confirmed in various organs including oral apparatus, and induced odontogenic tumor and its related lesions have been reported in several papers1-5) during carcinogenic experiments with this chemical. It is generally thought that odontogenic epithelia (reduced enamel epithelium, fragmented dental lamina, epithelial rests in the periodontal ligament) may well play a role in the pathogenesis of odontogenic tumors. And the epithelial rests in the periodontal ligament are known to proliferate under certain stimuli61. However, the initial stage of epithelial proliferation in odontogenic tumor has not been clarified as yet. The present study was intended to make further detailed observations in this respect.

Proliferation of epithelial rests of Malassez following auto-transplantation of third molars: a case report
INTRODUCTION Auto-transplantation of third molars is frequently undertaken in order to restore a perfect occlusion and to improve mastication following a substantial loss of molars. However, little is known about the precise role of the periodontal membrane during this procedure. Therefore, we investigated if the epithelial rests of Malassez persist in the periodontal ligament of auto-transplan...
متن کاملEpithelial rests of Malassez express immunoreactivity of TrkA and its distribution is regulated by sensory nerve innervation.
The periodontal ligament is the connective tissue that fills the space between the tooth and its bony socket. It is abundantly innervated by the sensory and sympathetic nerves. We first investigated the immunoreactivity of TrkA, which is a high-affinity receptor of nerve growth factor (NGF), in the periodontal ligament of rats. Immunoreactivity was observed at the epithelial cells in the cervic...
متن کاملMatrilysin (matrix metalloproteinase-7) expression in human junctional epithelium.
Matrilysin is a matrix metalloproteinase expressed in exocrine and mucosal epithelium in many human tissues. Immunohistochemical staining showed that matrilysin is expressed in suprabasal cells of junctional epithelium facing the teeth and in epithelial cell rests of Malassez. No matrilysin expression was seen in the periodontal pocket tissue. In a tissue culture model mimicking junctional epit...
متن کاملRole of interleukin-1 in pathogenesis of radicular cyst.
BACKGROUND Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is one of the cytokines produced by macrophages, monocytes and dentritc cells. Macrophages are present in apical granuloma and the wall of the radicular cyst. This cytokine causes the cyst expansion and is involved in proliferation of fibroblasts in the cyst wall and stimulate the fibroblasts to produce more prostaglandin. Radicular cyst is the most common cyst o...
متن کاملDifferential effect of the cytolethal distending toxin of Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans on co-cultures of human oral cells.
The periodontal pathogen Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans expresses a cytolethal distending toxin (CDT) that typically arrests the growth of eukaryotic cells at either the G0/G1 or G2/M phase of the cell cycle. It was previously found that CDT failed to arrest the growth of human periodontal ligament fibroblasts (HPLFs) when grown in pure culture. In contrast, proliferation of an oral epith...
